Active holidayThe municipality of Frauenau (616 m above sea level) with approx. 2,700 residents is the glass heart of the Bavarian Forest, directly on the Glass Road, at the foot of the Rachel.
Frauenau lies 7 km east of Zwiesel, 22 km north of Grafenau and 16 km from the district town of Regen. We have put together a small selection of our favourite tours, which take you through some of the 15 districts of Frauenau. There is also a lot of other information available at reception.
Come and talk to us; we'll be happy to give you some advice.
Our local Rachel mountain
1,453 mOur local Rachel mountain can be explored from the hotel.
Our personal hiking tip for you: from Oberfrauenau you can climb up in approx. 2.5 hours. You will discover a constantly changing vegetation - from beech trees and birch trees to mossy rocks, dead areas and meadows. You will reach Waldschmidhaus (1,360 m) with wonderful views of the reservoir and can enjoy something to eat and drink there.
Then carry on up to the summit where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the picturesque mountain ranges. Enjoy the sunshine on the way back down via the Rachel chapel (1,212 m) and to Lake Rachel (1,071 m); this should take approximately 1.5 hours. We recommend that you take the route to Gfäll (950 m) and from there the Igelbus to Spiegelau. From Spiegelau, the forest railway (free with your guest card) will take you back to Frauenau. A day tour that will amaze you.
The Lusen
1,373 mOur tip for families. Duration: approx. 5 hours incl. breaks.
It's a short drive (approx. 15 minutes) away from the hotel to the starting point - Fredenbrücke (840 m). From there you can set off on a beautiful climb along the Ohe, past moss-covered rocks and up to the Martinsklause (974 m). After a small break, continue across the Teufelsloch (1,100 m) towards the summit.
Carry on along the planks and you’ll reach the glass ark (1,176 m). Take a small breather and don’t forget to take some souvenir photos of this unique piece of glass art. Then carry on up the Himmelsleiter to the summit (1,373 m). It will take around 30 minutes to get from the glass ark to the summit. When you reach the top, you’ll be amazed at the natural spectacle. Marvel at a stony sea covered in lichen – that’s our Lusen! A view that almost brings tears to your eyes. It’s always an experience, whatever the season.
The Schutzhütte offers delicious, simple dishes and cakes. A cool shandy tastes particularly good. The descent down the Winterweg is relaxed and lasts approx. 45 minutes. The Igelbus takes you back to your car in comfort. Ask about the departure times in the Schutzhaus so that you might be able to enjoy sitting and enjoying the scenery for a little longer. It’s always a great tour for our family. Our son Paul managed to go the whole way by himself and was amazed. So pack your hiking backpack and off you go!.
The Falkenstein
1,315 mWe can’t say which mountain is the most beautiful. Let’s just say that they all have their own appeal and are all wonderful in their own way. The Falkenstein has waterfalls, mossy rocks and a varied ascent. We recommend parking your car in Scheuereck (770 m) and climbing across the Höllbachgespreng and along the Höllbachfälle. Duration: approx. 2.5 hours.
When you reach the summit (1,315 m) you can see towards Deggendorf. Enjoy some refreshments in the Schutzhaus. The descent across the Sulzschachten is varied and leads you across the Höllbachfälle and back to your starting point. A tour that lasts approx. 5 hours including a break. Then enjoy a snack in the hotel followed by a visit to the pleasantly warm sauna. A wonderful day on holiday.
The Frauenau Dam
767 m Approx. 4 hours from the hotel. Along the black trail towards Oberfrauenau, you’ll reach the dam crest after around 1 hour. It is supplied by the Hirschbach and Kleiner Regen rivers. Water from the Frauenau Dam supplies the districts of Cham, Deggendorf, Dingolfing-Landau, Straubing-iBogen, Freyung-Grafenau, Passau and Regen. The circular trail around the dam takes around 1.5 hours. A simple tour with lots of sun. You can take a break at the Gutsgasthof Oberfrauenau with its lovely beer garden and enjoy some delicious bread with potatoes and cheese.
